I think it is time for /vp/ and the entire Pokemon community to realize the damage megas caused on the franchise, and that it may have caused the beginning of the end. Gen 6 introduced mechanics which started the demise of the franchise, and it is sad that people don't realize this.

That was Z-Moves. There was no reason to think SM wouldn't have new Megas-- in fact, most people were dumbfounded that there weren't.

How? The Gen 6 meta was par for the course, and SM and SWSH only ended up being even more oversaturated.
You can't pin this shit on megafags because they've already proven they're willing to adjust each Mega accordingly. You tards love to deflect to M-Kangaskhan but ignore that it got nerfed to hell and back in Gen 7.

The concept of X and Y megas meant that there were even more mindgames than megas already introduced as they turned special attackers into physical ones. There's no reason they couldn't have given the same treatment to Typhlosion and Suicune in SM.

Barring Mega Ray, they were all sidegrades at best. Mega Garchomp, Tyranitar, Gyarados, and Salamence are all situational at best.

I think it's time for /vp/ and the entire Pokemon community to realize the damage Alola had on the franchise, and that it may have caused the beginning of the end. Gen 6 introduced mechanics that would have been completely well-founded if only GF cared to expand on them instead of wiping the slate clean.
It's sad that people don't realize this, even after Gen 7 started the trends of removing the National Dex, adding map markers in ADDITION to more roadblocks, removing triples/rotation, removing destructible backgrounds, adding gimmicks that canonically don't even work outside of the region they were introduced in, getting away with half-assing the plot and not using future games as an opportunity to expand on that, removing would-be staple features like the PSS and Super Training, and overall just simplifying the game.

I'm still dumbfounded. It was clearly popular, and there were plenty of Pokemon left to give Megas. Doing regional forms alongside them would have given the concept more leg too (Mega Alolan Ninetails one gen, regular Ninetails another, ect) but instead they kind of abandoned it.

Except they obviously didn't. The marketing, beta elements, and content that did make it into the final version all point to Sun and Moon being a continuation of the things that Gen 6 was building up to, you could even argue they were SUPPOSED to be the "Z" versions we never got.

And yet, Z-Moves are the first one to be constrained specifically by region. How can you say that Megas started it when they're a completely different animal from Z-Moves and Dynamax?
Again, we know that Alola had a huge shift in development halfway through, and the decision to do trials instead of gyms was literally put together last minute. Even just from the placeholders we got from the gigaleak, they used plenty of Kalos placeholders, like Xerosic in areas where the Ultra Recon squad ended up being in USUM.
You're free to dislike Gen 6, but you're shitting yourself if you think Megas were a signal of anything other than itself.

How can the first battle gimmick be the one that started the new gimmick every Gen trend? There's no reason at all why they couldn't expand the concept every Gen and it become a core part of the series - no different to items/abilities/cross-gens/regionals/etc.
It was arguably Z-Moves (although Megas still existed in Gen 7) and definitely DMax that made it clear GF are just gonna cut the last gimmick for the new one each Gen.

This is fair, the shitty distribution and overabundance of Megas for already powerful Pokemon sucked. But again would have been fixed by just increasing the Mega pool each Gen.

Gen 8 easily could've done without a gimmick granted SM's gimmick was literally just a one-turn nuke. People were hyping up some new form change gimmick for SM but the closest we got were regional forms. It would've been nice for SwSh to give old mons new evos without opting into the regional form route, but they decided to go one step further and force another form change gimmick into the game.

Absolutely this. The problems with Pokemon now didn't start with the jump to 3D - they had 3 years to refine things for the next gen. But Gen 7 takes more than it gives, and Gen 8 takes away even more from Gen 7.
I'm glad you pointed out the Pokedex problem too, my worries for a smaller Dex in Gen 8 were because of SM's Dex. And look were we are now. It's not surprising in hindsight, but it sure is depressing

And abilities being a 'gimmick' is laughable. They've been a core staple of the game since they were added, only LGPE removed them

I agree, Battle Addition =/= Battle Gimmick.
If it's a natural part of battles that isn't restricted by the region that introduced it, it's not a gimmick.
For this reason, Gen 7 should be the worst because Sun and Moon are the games that started the whole regional gimmick trend, while also removing core features like the National Dex and triples/rotation (and later SWSH removing Megas and doubling down on those decisions).

Don't bother. These retards will do literally anything to cope and try and deflect how Z-Moves were the first regional gimmick. Megas are just the low hanging fruit because they're activated similarly to the Wonder Launcher with a wrist dongle.

Megas were never constrained to Kalos. XY didn't even have any Gen 6 megas, they were always meant to be a remake thing.

Source? They were in LGPE, which is a remake, which means they haven't forgotten that Megas are a Gen 1-4 gimmick.

Careful, you might as well spread the whole series too thin as a gimmick.
After all, if what's removed can only be gimmicked then it means the rest of the Pokemon, the National Dex, and the ability to explore the world during the main story are all gimmicks.
