I only played Emerald as a kid and that's it. I only caught glimpses of the cartoon on TV a couple of times but I never really cared that much because I was more of a Yugifag at the time and then I just lost touch with the whole anime thing for quite a lot of years. I tried playing my old copy of Emerald recently but I finished the game and the Battle Frontier thing was too weird was so I decided to try out the other Pokemon media stuff. That's why I was hoping for some advice. I have to decide between the anime and the manga

yeah, it's popular because we're hooked on the premise of nostalgia and the feeling of playing the games for the first time as a kid. there's a joke about how/v/ actually hates video games. the same applies here, but it's not a joke - almost everybody here is jaded and tired, and the community actively splits itself up as much as possible so that it can fight amongst itself
there is nothing of value or merit waiting for you in this franchise, leave while you still can

Ignore this idiot. Pokemon is great. Been a fan since Red and Blue, watched only the first two seasons of the anime, and I just recently started reading the manga.

For the record, the creator of Pokemon has said on record that the Adventures manga is the closest to the world he was originally envisioning so it might be worth checking out. I like it so far.

The only people who complain about SwSh are those who suck at the competitive side of the game. They rather have everyone run around in a single player adventure despite the fact that Pokemon is meant to be a multiplayer game with some story added. Thus the reason the story is never anything that deep.

People expect Pokemon to be like Golden Sun or something but it's simply not that. It wasn't that even in Gen 1.

You obviously don't follow the comp scene. It's like that with every generation. At the start you can only use normal mons from that region's dex. By the end of the generation, legendaries are allowed.

The game really is about collecting, trading, and battling at it's core. It's not meant to be a deep single player RPG. Go play Xenoblade if that's what you want lol. The single player story in Pokemon literally only serves as a extended tutorial and to give context to the world. The creators also wanted multiplayer to be the core focus though.

Seconded, kind of.

I'd also recommend playing the final versions of all mainline games up to gen4 (that is Yellow + Crystal + Emerald + Platinum), followed by Black or White, and lastly Black or White 2. These are what you could call the "essentials".

Maybe give the original Sun or Moon a shot for better NPC characterization in exchange of other things.

i dont think so, back when gen 1 was first made the devs couldnt possibly have thought that the tier of multiplayer we have today would be possible.

And the inspiration for creating the game was literally the Gameboy's link cable. Multiplayer was always the focus. Sorry you're either too dumb or young to realize that.

yes yes i know the link cable was a thing.
but what im pointing out is that at the time the devs likely didnt pick multiplayer as the main focus because of how it was constricted to the link cable then.
but instead built a thing or two around it like version exclusives pokemon and pokemon that evolve through trading.

I guess we'll ignore the fact the game had a colosseum mode in every Poke center for battling and that the game's core mechanic is in fact, battling.

It's literally impossible to experience the complete collecting, trading, and battling experience without a link cable.

The Gameboy obviously had it's limits, but Pokemon was meant as a multiplayer game clearly. Compare it to other multiplayer GB games and it was much further along than them.

I'm guessing you're both 13 and dumb.

Do I have to ladder to master ball rank to complain about the hours long story the game is marketed with several times before release that people are forced to mash A through? Should people who don't want to get into competitive have the games that had decent stories have new stories made awful and single player watered down? When do I get to complain that the models of old pokemon shown during competitive battling were first developed before their first usage in 2010? Can I start mentioning other issues of a $60 + tip + DLC video game sold twice at the same time in different packaging after you complain about me briefly mentioning the tree that had its textures fixed by a fan within 2 hours? Just play the games. Gen 3 - Gen 5 are the best, Gen 1 and 2 are good but you may find them outdated and they got remade in Gen 3 and 4 respectively.
