Why does gamefreak still adhere to their gameboy design philosophy? Why is this a straight line with forest scenery instead of normal forest like in BOTW.

because you still bought gen 3, gen 4, gen 5, gen 6, and gen 7 even though they were all outclassed by their contemporaries in map design.

What difference does it make if all you can do is walk on grass to capture what you want and pick up a couple items?
What does making the forest a complex maze or an open area accomplishes?

They don't. Gen 1 has better dungeons and cities than SwSh.

Im saying that for what GF does a straight line is more than enough
If they were to make an amazing map but then there is nothing in it that would be even worse than the straight line
They need to revamp the entire way they make games to make a good forest a place worth being in at all

the problem is that even placing a 10 max revives or a masterball there isn't even something that makes you happy you went exploring anymore since the games hold your hand so much they might as well remove the entire gameplay and treat it as a visual novel

They're just still having the same problem they had in SM with "shit how do we design a map that doesn't look artificial?" they had in the base game, but I think the DLC showed they're learning fast. Alot of places in the two DLC areas were pretty close to the geography and layout of DQ11 areas.

I'm fully confident Gen 9 will have better maps than anything since XY.

Make a complex forest and then make you go in it to look for lost pokemon for sidequests and have little stories to them too
but if routes are nothing but the way you get from city a to city b a straight line is more than enough

It's a misty area. Maybe mist is obstructing a hidden pathway. The act of finding it is rewarding in and of itself.

yeah, even though there is a grand total of TWO (arguably small) caves.
one of which has a healer sitting outside of both entrances, even though you can go through both of them without fighting a single wild pokemon.

The problem is the layout in general not that it's not open world,. Open world is only successful if you have a lot of little details or stuff going on without the player. Pokemon switches to turn based battles so none of that is going to make the game better. Making routes as explorable areas would be more than enough and they've been doing it since ocarina

I fucking wish. The gameplay hasn't been good since Gen 6, when it actually was built like GameBoy Games.
It's to the point where fucking Let's Go was closer than what we have now.
