What I find amusing is when games clearly inspired by Pokemon wind up being better than Sword and Shield. So far they're just Disc Creatures, but I'm keeping an eye on Coromon (if it gets better), EvoCreo (for a buck its really fucking good), Monster Crown, and I keep waffling on Temtem for a 3D Pokemon-style game. ChemCaper was a neat idea but it ran like shit on my device so I never found out how good it was in the end. Then there's stuff clearly inspired by the spinoff like the rare few Pokemon Snap-style games (Alekon, Alba: Wildlife, and Beasts of Maravilla Island).
If we're going with fangames there's Pokemon Island and Super Eevee Edition as examples, to say nothing of all the 16+ gym or 3 region fangames. Then there's all the romhacks.
