With gen 2 the brand was at its top, because of the added features compared to R/S/Y. Full colors, day/night cicle - with spawns based on it, events based on what day of the week was, compatibility with gen 1, two regions, roaming legendaries. In short, the games were a great upgrade from the firsts, and a lot of immersion was added. Hopes were high for the future, as were expectations.
How we live pokemon today is very different... Especially on expectations, which are very low

I played Gen 3 more back then, but Gen 2 was still the best to me despite playing Gen 1 before it. Think it's because Gen 2 still had tasteful 90s aesthetics but wasn't as extremely technologically limited as Gen 1.

I would give anything to be born to a wealthy family in a first world country in 1990 so I can experience Pokemon at its absolute peak. Unfortunately I only got into Pokemon in 2006 playing RBY and Emerald.

'91 boomer here who's played since gen 1. For me gen 2 was the best - it introduced loads of new innovations and cool pokemon, and I loved the fact you went to Kanto as well. I also think it had the best atmosphere.

Even today, every now and then, I replay Crystal in my spare time. That said, I've completed Shield ( and the first dlc, the second is waiting ) and what I really want is to be amazed by playing a new pokemon game, just like it did back then. What I suffer most is the castrated exploration ( and handholding ) of these new titles, coupled with the fact that they have failed to make that jump that requires games when they pass from 2D to 3D. ( see: Zelda Oot or Mario 64, for example )
Today it's really painful to love the brand and, at the same time, to hate how it is managed for the main game... And surrendering hope for a "let's hope the next game suck less"

Wrong zoomy, designer wise they are just as good if not better than Kanto. The ONLY reason they suck in competitive is because Lame Freak intentionally nerfed them so that Kantofags wouldn't throw a tantrum at their shillmon being outclassed.

In what way. Design-wise they're grand enough to communicate their power, yet simple enough to look natural. Also they're lore types in to the region without being overbearing on the story. Lugia even made the random birds form Kanto make sense.

I've never even played Gen1-2

The first few months of Pokemon Go felt pretty close, what with pokemon being talked about by more than just fans, people besides nintendo trying to profit from the craze, and people doing crazy shit being in the news. All we need was for the video games to be actually good and for the anime to have fun banter in it again.
