I think the prevailing theory is that the classic anime-style of pokemon "peaked" in XY, so they decided to experiment with a more western, cartoony style. Anything they would've made would be compared to XY anyways so they said fuck it and we ended up with that. It's a bit rough at first but you can see the style develop over the years into what the current anime is. Quite the interesting direction for sure, I wish GF could be that bold and experimental with the games.

It's not really a fair comparison to put handpainted backgrounds in low definition and digital backgrounds in high defintion up against one another. They could be working from the same color palettes but the resulting image would be totally different.

Yokai Watch had a catastrophic effect on this franchise, the entirety of gen7 was basically TPCi bending over backwards to copy it as much as possible because they were scared shitless of it.

The weird neon colors they chose feel cold as shit and not tropical at all.
Dark green vegetation and deep blue sea would fit the tropical atmosphere much better than blueish neon green vegetation and toilet blue sea.

If you guys are gonna compare old and new anime, could you at least... ya know, post examples of ANIMATION instead of stills? Without any proper examples of how both look in motion I'm just reminded of those people that take in betweens out of context and say "looks bad so whole show is bad".
I haven't seen SM but I'm currently rooting for that side just because of how conductive to good animation that style looks. (Granted, this is Pokemon so it's probably not that good)

When I first started watching SM it was extremely jarring beyond the art style and I couldn't figure out exactly why till I paused for a piss. Honestly i didnt watched it and im only talking animations not storywise. But bad animes always existed. You cant deny the countless badly done filler episodes in your favorites anime.
