It's not a bug, outside of prerendered cutscenes no character has turning animations, every last one's the same "stop and go" tank movement, these hacks never left 2d grid games.

Thanks to the culling drama, criticizing pokemon almost became a political stance, so if you even remotely liked the series, or wanted to hang out with the "REAL" fans, these games have no flaws and you can do nothing but praise it, anything less and you're in entitled manbaby of a fake fan.

I've sunk close to 100 hours in the game and while I do agree that its an overall fun experience, it does feel really hollow and unpolished, GF has always set a relatively low bar for pokemon games but this is the first time I feel like the game slipped below quality control. If a student tried turning in an animation like that for an assignment they would get a failing grade, its seriously immersion breaking seeing all the really small problems that appear through the game, it feels like the only way to enjoy it is to play it while inebriated or while doing something else and casually playing it the same way you would play a mobile game or scroll through twitter.

At least contests gave you something worthwhile to do. Curry making is so pointless. The game already hands out EXP like (literal) candy, and you're never more than a menu press away from healing. Contests involved team crafting, you got ribbons for it, you have to grow berries and create poffins/blocks to beat the highest levels of play. There's a craft to it and when you beat it you can feel satisfied because you're achieving something that's worthwhile within the game.

At least Sun and Moon offers some difficulty when playing blind the first time. There are quite a few points where you can get completely destroyed like Totem Lurantis because there's a decent spike. There's nothing like that in Sword and Shield. I can't remember a single point in the game where I felt invested.

Because they've done nothing to advance the series otherwise. Both gameplay and "plot structure" wise, it's no different from red and blue. After 25 years, it's safe to assume they're never going to change that, so the only hope for improvements comes in the visuals, and seeing how they haven't left the niche they carved back in XY, that's stagnated as well.

I don't hate cutscenes, I hate pointless cutscenes. I don't need Lillie to teach me about ledges, nor do I need an NPC to walk me two doors down to a hotel. I acknowledge that this a building problem but gen 7 and 8 are a real breaking point. A good chunk of the dialogue in both games is just pointless filler that could be given to any optional NPC.

Well I was a first time kid when I started the series and I didn't need an elaborate cutscene about jumping down ledges. Giving optional tutorials for new players worked in early gens. It never needed changing. Kids are no where near as stupid as Gamefreak, or you apparently, seem to think they are.

My problems with the animations in this game is usually limited to Pokemon (It's clear the trainer animation in battle was more of a priority for some reason) but are Gordie's animations stiff and awkward or is it just me? His idle stance and the animations don't really match up well.

It's funny though when there's a background for battles on bridges but then they still have your battles with Hop be shown incorrectly to be in a field. And how the hotel lobby battles are just in a white void. Or how Raihan's gym trainers battle in a private secure vault with fragile historical relics (reused from an earlier cut scene about Sonia's research) when they're supposed to be public displays, especially since Raihan is the social media guy.

At least Sun and Moon had you bouncing between islands and making your way through some neat areas. SwSh is a straight fucking line from beginning to end.

I keep trying to get back into it but I just can’t. It makes me feel genuinely miserable whenever I play it.

I enjoyed ORAS a lot more than XY because they kept the map design of the original and the secrets that came with it, so I’m a bit more hopeful for the DP remakes if they do the same thing there.

If there is any indication that it’s another hallways simulator I’m going to be fucking pissed.

I feel like Sun and Moon, while not perfect, can at least justify their linear nature by having a much, much stronger emphasis on story. Though some might not like that (I'm pretty mixed) but the game's plot is very focused on teaching you about Alola's heritage and Lillie's family drama and as a result if you end up enjoying the story, the linear path won't be much of a problem. Also in terms of raw world building SM are some of the best in the series alongside Sinnoh. Each island and town has a unique culture. The lore has things like the tapus, the island challenge. It's a strong connection tissue even if the game is weak in other areas.

In comparison Sword and Shield's story is lackluster, unfocused, and dull. Rose's motivation doesn't make much sense, the game points out how dumb it's plot is, the game doesn't really give Hop, Bede, or Marnie enough focus to give the player an attachment to them, and the lore is stretched way too fucking thin. The only thing I can say about it is the individual towns are nice but they also feel rather hollow and dead.

The way Pokemon animation works is that the Pokemon themselves are not actually animated. The attack is animated and it tells the model how to move. So every Pokemon has the same parameter. So when a Pokemon uses tailwhip it breaks it down like "model turns 180 degrees, model swivels left right, effect xx plays" or "Pokemon uses special attack animation, effect xx plays" That's overly simplified to get the basic point across but the attack plays out the same no matter who uses it. They're not crafted for each individual Pokemon. That's what leads to awkward jumps and shit. The models don't have unique motions for the moves.

I feel like there's a video or a blog post essay that goes into more detail about this but I can't remember who did it.

Because that's Cinderace's basic physical attack animation. So it tells it to use that animation because Headbutt is a physical attack. It's really odd that Double Kick for some reason doesn't use this animation but I assume that's a result of multi-hit moves having that awkward jump animation attached to them. I'd have to investigate more and see how other multi-moves operate though.

I don't think so, but I'm not sure. Sadly gen 6-8 don't have the same amount of catalogued data as the first 5. Bulbapedia has gifs for each attack from those gens but gen 6-8 is just stills and there aren't videos detailing every attack animation.

Pokemon was always a fairly mediocre RPG with the occasional high points. It was the collecting, trading, and battling, tied with a promotional cartoon that made it popular in the first place. There wasn't anything quite like it before.

The novelty of being a new concept is gone, the internet age has not only made trading so easy that it's also lost it's novelty, it's made the whole "Two versions" thing an outdated concept, but of course they still do it to prey on autistic collectors who will buy the game game twice. And whatching two static jpegs collide together was fine in '98, the "upgrade" in battle animations over the years is such a joke. You might as well be playing a trading card game.

And then collecting has become pointless too now that you can't collect all the pokemon in one game anymore. The only reason they're doing this is to hold your pokemon hostage so you will subscribe to HOME, because smart people were actually just making one payment to Bank to transfer everything to whatever the current game was and leave it there, and not renewing their subscription later. Because paying for pokemon storage is retarded.

None of the current issues with pokemon by themselves is enough to make a game bad, but when they all come together like this, shits fucked and I don't want to drop... how much is it now to get the full experience? Sixty for base game, 30 for DLC, 5 for Bank to import my gen 6-8 pokemon, and, how much for Home? I wouldn't know because I didn't get it.

Fans are paying absurd amounts for a mediocre game just because they're too attached to a brand they grew up, or that their parents grew up with and they turned them onto it, and that's all there is to it. It's very tough for me to imagine anyone with no prior experience with pokemon getting into this shit nowdays without it being some kinda peer pressure thing.

But I thought the SwSh Exp. Share was exactly like the FFVII Exp. Share, so it kept the reserve party members up to speed so that they wouldn't be underleveled if I swapped my party around! Those games often force you to use specific party members at certain points in the game, and that requires you them to have a system to keep those party members ready. Other JRPGs also tend have other systems in check that make it so the reserve members lose out on something by not being in the battle. Pokemon doesn't do this. Barring a few story-related battles where they give you the Pokemon at the perfect level Pokemon never forces you to use a specific Pokemon in battle, and those who do not participate in battle still earn EVs which means they lose out on nothing.

Were kids turning it off and then dropping the game when they realized they just created a grind for themselves? Or did GF just not want to have to worry about balancing the game around both people using exp share and those not using it? Exp candies made the entire concept of balance go out the window, like how you're given a level one Toxel right before Nessa's gym even though it's only useful when it evolves at level 30. No. It works in those games because there's going to be a point where you lose a certain party member for story reasons, and you have to dish out a party member you've ignored. This party member then is still at a disadvantage if ignored because they'll likely have a secondary level up system that you're not getting points for (Such as the Ether system in Xenosaga Episode I).

Pokemon never forces you to lose a party member, and thus there is no reason for a system like this to be in place, nor is there a drawback for ignoring your party with the EXP share.

In all this arguing over what does or doesn't count as being a "reserve party member", you're missing the actual problem with forced Exp. Share itself. The main draw of Pokemon gameplay during the story is raising and training your Pokemon from route 1 shitters to champion-killers. The forced Exp. Share automates this process, so you don't have to put any actual effort into raising a Pokemon; just throw it on the team and let your starter do the fighting. The same problem exists. If you level that Pokemon up with EXP share after catching it later in the game your team overall will just get over leveled faster. Especially for an egg. Switching in and out, or the singular EXP share works better in these cases but Gamefreak took that solution away.

Same reason why ceiling lights have a wall switch, you turn it off when you don't need it on. Some people prefer to rotate their team organically rather than just power through the game with their starter because there's no longer a hard reason not to.

I, the person who is "happy" with the bare minimum, am I gonna call you a toxic fan for wanting the series I supposedly love to reach peaks never reached before.
Stuff like this makes me want to pull a ZUN or Yoko Taro and learn how to make games, even if I have to learn how to draw, code, compose music, etc all on my own and create my own franchise where if by some miracle it gets popular I'll listen to the hardcore fanbase, the people who fucking love the thing I made and want it to be better and better and better.
I honestly don't get this world anymore. It really makes me feel like I'm the crazy one.

This one really confused me as it should not be that hard. The super lazy way JRPGs have used for millions of years, is you create a box with the same floor and wall textures. Can add a little bit of structure here and there, LGPE even had some background models of that area.

This. SWSH was made to be as easily consumable as possible rather than leaning into any strengths. GF only expects you to get attached to their chosen kanto mons and whatever is being shilled. You do not need to raise them and the complete lack of bumps in difficulty (even by pokemon standards) means you'll never form stories. I think a good comparison is SMT, there you are not meant to care about your demons. They are tools, they barely level up even with exp shared (plus the stat increases are poor) and are really only meant to last a few hours till you fuse them away. Pokemon is about raising, every story, ad and themed butt plug is about the bonds you form. SWSH even kind of gets this with the camp but it barely even scratches the surface of what should be there. You don't bond through battle any more, and the social features never caught up enough to replace that.

There are plenty of areas in all of the games up until SwSh that aren't required for you to travel to for the story, but in SwSh, you see literally everything in the main story and aren't given a single opportunity to go off and see things for yourself.

I would be fine with it if the story was more engaging and actually made you want, but it's also incredibly dull. You aren't the main character, Leon is. The entire time you're just watching as he does basically everything that YOU would have been doing in the previous games. It gets to the point where you're just going through the motions until you reach the end. It's miserable

I hate Leon for this reason.

How does SWSH prioritise them? You know, the game that removed so many and didn't significantly fix up animations. The only expansion in that direction were overworld pokemon (not the first, many poorly animated) and camp which is barely an upgrade on amie.

Plus the world is important to pokemon, even more so with them in the overworld. It is a huge chance to see them in their natural habitat, make them feel like real creatures naturally in the world. But just in general having to search out rarer ones in certain cut off sections of the map gives this sense of wonder.

I'm surprised they did that to be honest. You had the dynamaxed Pokemon in the post-game but those didn't involve the dens or other raid mechanics. And then in Expansion Pass you had 3 solo raids with Vespiqueen, Greedent, and Regigigas, but those weren't the regular raids either. It's funny, since not a single regular raid was required at any post. At least with the Max Lair they required you to try it once.

It depends on what you consider bad. The games are functional and there are no game-breaking bugs. The game is good for people who like to play online as it's short and raising a competitve team is easier than ever and you can even use rentals if want.
But if we are talking about the rest of the game, it is simply not as fleshed out as some past entries, and is not an impressive jump at all for the transistion to far more powerful hardware. You have to treat it as some annual multiplayer game like CoD and decide if you are okay with that. You cannot have your cake and eat it too because the multiplayer is the priority and HD games are harder to make
