Was the ancient pokemon world just full of (almost) only rock type pokemon, or are rock types just more likely to turn into fossils?

I had always assumed many of them gained the rock typing by virtue of having been fossilized.

An imperfection in the reanimation process? It seems odd that that would carry over to their offspring if bred.
We also know that being a fossil doesn't garuntee a rock typing, though, from Sword and Shield.

Relicanth is also a living fossil, unchanged for like, a fuckton of years, and it's Water/Rock.
The signs point to ancient Pokemon being mainly Rock type.

I want some Ice Age era fossil pokemon that are Ghost/X Type. Make them stuff revived after being pulled out of Tar.

Or Dark/X Type because of the tar. I would enjoy a Sabertooth, Mammoth, and Thunderbird set.

That seems at odds with the fact that the absolute oldest pokemon are legendary like Mew and Arceus, which are not rock type.
Regardless, Relicanth definitely supports the theory that the ancient pokemon world just had Rock as the default typing for all pokemon, much like how Normal is the default typing for modern-day pokemon world.

Tar mons would probably still be Rock-type, since Tar Shot is a Rock-type move.
But I do like the idea of fossilmons reviving with other types. Like one that was frozen in ice being an Ice-type, or a recently extinct mon preserved in formaldehyde being revived as a Poison-type.

This. Also “Mega Aerodactyl” being the true form, and the fossil reviving process restoring it incomplete with FEWER rocks supports the theory that they were always rock type.

i've always thought so.. I wouldn't be too surprised if one gen we'll get an ancient/primal. I've always dreamed of a game where we go through different periods of time and get to visit the original era fossil pokemon came from.
