Gen 1-2 had some hard limits that forced many designs to go in a certain direction and with size constraint, this is why we see the smiley faces reoccurring, simple patterns, straight forward anatomy and design. Since gen 3 was the first to bridge the gap, but was still somewhat limited, we saw them pushing the design yes but they still had to respect that cohesion. The limits were basically gone by Gen 4, so we lose that equalizer between the sprites. Colors all over the place, throwing unnecessary details on stuff just because they can.

either way i understand why people may not like the gen 4-5 artstyle and while i agree that some mons that look pretty bad would've probably been better in the old style, i still believe gen 4 has a LOT of good mons

This but unironically.
Voltorb is a mimic. Since items are in Pokeballs on the overworld, a mimic in the Pokemon world would naturally look like a Pokeball instead of a treasure chest.
It's also based on a tsukumogami, which is a Japanese legend that an inanimate objects gains a soul on its 100th birthday. Voltorb just so happens to be the 100th Pokemon in the Pokedex.
Crazy how even a simple and silly design has in-universe justification and out-of-universe cultural inspiration.

It worked in the limitations of the GB(C), but it doesn't make sense from an in-world perspective because Voltorb and Electrode are huge compared to a pokeball

Voltorb is really good in the games, but competitively it's only good for setting up dual screens and then using explosion or volt switch. Super fucking fast so it can use whatever move it wants no matter what, usually.

Electrode is bad and is only useful for setting up screens and swapping to another partner with Explosion or Volt Switch. Even with its insane speed, it's outclassed by other screen setters, like Tapu Koko.

We've already had this discussion. There is no canon size of Pokeballs. It's possible they can scale up and down at will.
Voltorb's entry states that it's "easily mistaken for a Pokeball" so yes, in canon, Voltorb resembles a Pokeball.

Gen 4 was the first rehash and most of the new pokemon were shit, and mostly just added unwanted babies and evolved forms of existing pokemon and they all looked like ass with almost none of the elements that made their evolved forms appealing. The middle forms are supposed to be the ugly awkward ones, not the final forms.

I don't understand why people use this as an example of gen 1 designs being bad, it's a decent take on the pokemon world's equivalent of a mimic since you find items inside pokeballs.

Would work better if you could find them outside of power plants. But that doesn't take away from it's design.

RS underperformed and the artstyles in manga/anime was changing, thus the devs changed to stay abreast of the curve. And given how well received DP was compared to RS, they made the right decision.
