I think they should have kept the overworld shit 2D, or at least chibi and stylized, possibly something like that Zelda remake on Switch, but the Battles should have been 3D with more properly proportioned models.

Of course if I had to have one or the other, i'd rather just go back to 2D. Maybe we could bring back Pokemon Stadium for 3D. It sure as shit would solve the lack of a post game just like it did for Red and Blue. But lord knows they don't want us to remember Pokemon Stadium and how many extra features it used to have that they don't want to provide in the modern day.

Why go with a pixel art aesthetic when each pixel is this tiny, just do fully painted backgrounds and sprites like Wonder Boy or the new Streets of Rage rather than this RPG-maker style.

3D made by a developer who cares would look gorgeous.
But knowing how Game Freak is known for cutting corners as long as whales keep buying, I have no doubt they aren't able to put up even good-looking 2D games anymore.

Why do people pretend GF’s 2D was good?

Compare gen 4 and 5 to even Pokemon Ranger that had diagonal movement, more detailed and natural looking maps, and sprites that weren’t animated like dogshit.

I think 3D isn't even that bad. There are some nice places in SW/SH with details and crisp graphics. Problem is the Wild Area which looks like shit ass. If they would put in another year of environment work it would be pretty good.

Personally I just think Pokemon needs a better 3D art direction. Gen 6 is rough but it still feels very Pokemon artistically, and LGPE feels like a natural step forward for the style used in the older games. The worlds depicted in gen 7 and 8 are just a bit too generic. The character models look decent enough but they're imposed over really boring world design. Especially on routes or the wild area.

The characters look fine... sort of. I do think they've gotten a little too far from how pokemon characters used to look.
But the main issue is that they don't act like 3D video game characters with properly proportioned bodies... they still act like they're gameboy sprites, Gamefreak needs to actually learn how to animate,
