Well calling it "Detective Pikachu" instead of "Pokemon" probably confused and alienated a lot of the potential audience for the film. It's also too weird and dumb. At least Sonic is like, The Smurfs movies but better, and the Smurfs movies were hugely successful.

The movie's main selling point was seeing real life pokemon. And the ending didn't leave much room for a sequel.

Sonic still has a whole host of characters yet featured in film.

Nah most of them were fine. It was the LACK of Pokemon that made the movie a boring one and done. There's a reason that the scenes people always talk about are the Mr. Mime, Torterra and Bulbasaur scenes as opposed to Tim and whatever the fuck the girl's name was.

Sonic's really only considered good because they changed the design. It's just another bland "Cartoon character in the real world running from a wacky villain that wants his cartoon magic" adaptation. They're a dime a dozen and Sonic falls into all the trappings that make those movies crap. Though it does manage to be the best of them at least, but it's still not really good. For all Detective Pikachu's faults it at least more or less adapted the game's plot, and tried to world build the concept of a Pokemon world.

But to answer OP's question WB is a garbage fucking studio that can't do anything right and has the worst management in the entire movie industry. It's amazing they got one movie out and no one should expect a second to ever happen. Even if DP made 2 billion at the box office they'd have fucked up production on the sequel. It's just how WB is.

The webmaster of that one Pokebeach site said he spoke to a TPC producer at the premiere of that one movie with the 3D Mewtwo remake, and he said that the producer told him that while TPC was happy with it and would be up for another film the movie studio they partnered up with was unhappy with results and didn't want to do more.

In other words, DP just didn't make enough money for Hollywood folks to want to invest in another go.

I understand why they wanted to test the water with something like Detective Pikachu but I think most normalfags were turned off by the movie not being about Ash or Red. Hell most actual Pokemonfags were turned off by it not being about Red. It's really not that terrible though. It could have been worse.

In their defense that was also a result of Capcom being Capcom. Just like with Donte Capcom told them to make something that was nothing like the actual source material. They also wanted to cut episodes to better the budget across the season and Japan wouldn't let them whic was why season 2 got canned. With Sonic that kind of stuff seems to be more controlled.

Executives knew three things: That Pokémon is popular, Pikachu was the mascot, and wise-cracking CGI animals were what everyone else was doing at the time

They saw the Paddington, Peter Rabbit, and the Chipmunks and decided they needed to jump on that, so why not nail all three of those with a story that puts Pikachu front and center and makes him a wisecracking CGI animal.

Meanwhile what FANS wanted was sort of an adventure/sports movie hybrid about a trainer building his team and competing, like the games. But DP seemed like the safest way to dip toes into the Pokémon franchise in the eyes of out of touch CEOs, and seeing Pika talk with Ryan Reynolds voice and making coffee fart jokes was just too much of a turnoff
