Why do Gen 1 Pokemon have such shitty stats? Particularly, the starters

Link Battles weren't originally going to be a thing, so a lot of stat distributions were pretty arbitrary when the main goal was simply to catch them all.

My guess was because sp. atk and sp. def used to be one stat in gen 1, which means Charizard would have 109 for both those stats if it carried over
I wouldn't know whether that still makes Charizard and other pokemon underwhelming though I haven't paid much attention to that stuff in a minute

Pokemon wasn't designed around multiplayer until way later down the line, Gen 1 Pokemon that are good in comp are good because they have naturally good stats or typing, got a move or ability that made them viable in later gens, or if you're shillzard, got a broken alternate form as a gimmick.

Back then, all stats were maxed out. And as other anons said, the focus wasn't on multiplayer comp. So you ended up with a ton of mons that just had stats slapped on to them.

Gen 1 is fine

Gen 2 on the other hand feels really weak. Tons of Pokemon with like 1 stat above 80. I mean even Gen 1 mons you don't think of as "strong" like Golduck or Magmar can make for pretty good sweepers ingame but many Gen 2 mons are a pain to use even in-game.

how did they think poor ledian was okay? Fucking butterfree is stronger and evolves much earlier, the closest you could get to making it usable is buffing attack so you can make use of iron fist

They've given +10-30 BST to a few mons in gens 6 and 7 but for the most part they're all still complete shitters. Which is fine, not everything needs to be a super powerful threat but they gotta buff a lot more stuff, older Pokemon just can't keep up for the most part.

Someone at Lame Freak either hates Johto or the region it based on. Johto’s early game mons are weak even by the standards of early game mons and Ledian is the poster bug. What’s worse Johto as a whole tends to be overlooked when it comes to relieving buffs when compared to other regions. They aren’t completely overlooked as a some manage to be amazing like Scizor but for the most part they real seem afraid of Johto ever upstaging KANTOOO at anything.
