Different tileset than XY that tried too hard to be like the GBA games.
GameFreak is more afraid of reimagining their older games than they are accidentally making them worse in the process.

Because XY actually tried to be a 3D game and ORAS just ported the grid map directly from GBA games. That's a shame.

They aren't ugly in a vacuum. Game Freak just sucks at 3D and as a result couldn't capture the orginal gen 3 soul, but they didn't do a terrible job all things considered.

Trying to recreate a 2D game in 3D while keeping the maps 1 to 1. Same with LGPE. The last good remakes were on the DS, since it's hard to fuck up a 2D game. Don't expect anything good with the current state of Pokemon.
