It isn't competitive-wise since there are some worse megas, and it obviously isn't design-wise since 90% of megas are fucking hideous and much, much more puke-inducing than that.

End of a three Stage Line, meaning the Pokemon wasn't going to evolve further anyways
Clear and noticeable changes yet are subtle enough to feel like the same Pokemon
Fits with the lore of the Pokemon
Given to a Pokemon that needs a buff and actually buffs the Pokemon

This is literally one of the only Megas that does everything right.

A regular buff would have been the most logical and effective method. However, Lame Freak has shown time and time again that it is grossly incompetent at even the most basic elements of game balance. Mega Pidgeot is "done right" if we're judging by Lame Freak's (rather low) standards.

Sure, whatever. Doubles/Triples/Rotation were gimmicks too and we're still free to love them. I honestly don't even care up until they point they arbitrarily decide it can only be used in this ONE specific region like Z-Moves/Dynamax.

The problem with megashit is the opportunity cost.
All but 3 of them are pretty much worthless because you need to sacrifice using megashit Gengar, megashit Salamence, or megashit Metagross.
Even if something like megashit Gyarados is better than megashit Slowbro, both of them end up being equally unusable because of what you're giving up by using them.

Lets be real there’s not much you can do to really make garchomp better without putting it on the same caliber if not be stronger than most legendaries so if anything mega chomp is more of a wall breaking sidegrade to regular chino which isn’t really a terrible thing as not all Megas have to be a straight upgrade like look at mega Sableye, that Pokemon role completely different from its base form on a fundamental level but plays off of its prankster shenanigans so well that it turned it into a two in one mon.

There's a reason early game pokemon are usually dogshit, it's intentional. Giving it a mega allows pidgeot to still be shit for in-game purposes

Megas were really supposed to bring older Pokemon back into relevancy.
Unova and Kalos only got 1 after they were no longer the new region. They did it so as to not build any Pokemon's identity around the Mega.
Clearly they no longer give a shit though, since Duraludon turns into Rose Tower and Sandaconda somewhat only makes sense when you bring in the giant tornado element.
