I would never have a Pokémon battle for the sake of it. They are a means to get exp or money, to progress in the overworld, or some other less common reason like getting BP or ribbons. The rewards and auxiliary reasons for engaging in Pokémon battles make them worth putting up with, but they are never enjoyable or worthwhile without some kind of incentive.
