More like you have to go out of your way to do the gyms in order in Gens 1 and 2 you mouthbreathing retard. They want you to drop everything after Celadon and go straight to Fuchsia to fight Koga even though there's nothing stopping you from going straight to Saffron and fighting Sabrina instead, in fact that's the route you WANT to take if you want to use Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan because they come at such a low level that you'd have to go out of your way to grind them if you want to use them in the route GameFreak intended.
Same shit for Johto since you get Surf near Ecruteak and the nearest body of water leads to Pryce's gym. If you go that route, there's actually a fair enough wait before you have to fight Team Rocket at the radio tower which flows more easily if you get your Gyarados and take care of them at the secret hideout way before.
That's not even sequence breaking, that's intentional.

The replayability isn't in the scripted journey, it's in using different Pokémon during that scripted journey. Fighting gyms in a different order doesn't change anything, but using different Pokémon can change how you play.

Yes it does. Because if I have more fire and rock types than I do flying types then it's better if I have the option to fight the ice gym first where I have the advantage instead of needing to mindlessly grind to fight the fighting gym that also has plenty of dual water types.

It changes enough that people still consider the original DP redeemable because you could do 3 of them in any order, even though Platinum is still objectively better despite removing that.
So yes, it does change a lot.

no matter how many times you repeat it it won't ever be true. Gen 1 was BASED on open-world rpgs from the time, it doesn't mean it actually was. the fact there's levels at all proves this.
when you have instances like in Johto it doesn't mean the devs intended for it to be open, it just means you're going out of your way to sequence break because the level curve was poorly programmed.

Meanwhile in LGPE specifically, you can go anywhere except for Victory Road after Misty with the only large barrier really being Snorlax, which you can still tackle whenever you want which could either be 2 gyms later, 1 gym later, or no gym later if you want to book it to fuchsia and get surf instead.

Except it's not because the levels past Rock Tunnel and arguably even up to Cinnabar are all comparable. Even if you want to stretch gym order having slightly different levels it doesn't account for all the gift Pokemon being so low levelled as if they assumed players would want to get them as soon as possible.
