The egg you bring to Elm is apparently the first egg ever discovered in the Pokemon world, but then how do people have any idea that an egg can hatch and a living thing would come out?
Yeah, Chansey has eggs, but they don't hatch into anything.

In gen 2 eggs were a still something they didn't actually understand. Like it was treated as new. This is a problem Pokemon has where the world building is typically just "retcon that new thing in as a new discovery, and then a month later pretend like it's always been this way"
