It's weird too, because in gold Growlithe is found routes 7, 8, 36, and 37. Granted you can't evolve growlithe until Kanto anyway.

It's too bad because houndour is perfect for an ingame team in growlithes place. It evolves at level 25 as opposed to waiting till postgame to get a fire stone in GS

I think its neat leaving some mons till kanto to leave more to find after the elite four, but deciding it should be the fire/dark type, in a region that has so little fire/dark types to use already, was a poor decision

Johto leaned too hard on Kanto mons imo. It's good from a continuation standpoint, to really make it feel like this is just a new location in the same world, but did really bad at showcasing the few interesting new pokemon that gen 2 brought with it. I wonder how many kids beat Rocket Exec's Houndoom in Goldenrod and wondered where the pre-evolution for it was, as they clearly must have missed it.

Being in a dex doesn't make it native to that region. Zoroark appears in the Unova dex but is still implied to have migrated from Japan.

People tend to forget just how fucked Johto was when it first came out. It's the best region layout wise but almost none of their pokemon are usable. Half of gen 3 and 4's pokedex are nothing but additions or changes to gen 2's dex to try fixing it and making it less barren.

Heracross doesn't have great early level up moves. It's U-Turn would be absolutely busted though.

heracross would be about on par with scyther, assuming its gen 2 and theyre both using fury cutter. scyther is faster, but heracross is stronger and doesn't have quick attack, probably would use horn attack instead. you can hard counter scyther with geodude or onix, and you can take down heracross quick with flying moves.
