You pass out before you can do enough damage to die. Asphyxiation can result in brain damage, but that wouldn't exactly be an easy thing to do to yourself. Being deprived of oxygen after passing out is where that becomes more likely and where potential death becomes an issue, but that's unlikely to happen unless there's still something restricting oxygen flow after you've passed out, like being an an airtight structure.
