Can someone explain the snorunt line? Why does snorunt evolve into glalie?

I think one of the “themes” of gen 3 was evolutions looking very different from their prevos. See: Shroomish, Surskit, Makuhita, Gulpin, Spoink, Clampearl, Snorunt, etc. My only supporting evidence for this is that lots of prevos in gen 3 learn moves their evolutions don’t, I’m guessing to try to differentiate the lines a bit.
