I wish they'd have the rival take the one weaker to yours because he's so arrogant and confident that he's such a great trainer and he wants to win while at a disadvantage to you. And actually have him be a great trainer and win some of the times you battle. I don't think it would work in a game because they will always make it so you can win in the games but I like the idea.

Yeah but he doesn't check those other boxes, I don't think. I never played the game but it doesn't seem like it. I want someone so confident that he chooses the weaker starter purposely and trains it so well that it can compete with yours that has the advantage and beat it. An arrogant and competent trainer who can win against you.

Hau's not it either. Not personality-wise anyway. With a game, all you really focus on is what level the pokemon is. You don't see the intricacy of training a pokemon in the games. You just fight anything and level up. I don't think a game can portray what I want. Like what is that pokemon exposed to and what's its training regiment? If it's a grass type, does the rival have it fight mainly fire types to build up its resistance to fire attacks so that it can withstand them better? If it's slow, does the trainer have it run laps routinely to build up stamina and as much speed as the pokemon is capable of? I think it would be fun to have a serious rival who goes all out training his pokemon. The pokemon would also be fully into it too.

No one picks starters based on competitive viability or ingame usefulness and doing so doesn't make you smart. Only design matters and Charizard is a cool looking dragon so Charmander always wins the popular vote.

At least in Japan, Bulbasaur is more popular than Charmander.
Charizard is more popular because TPC keeps removing all of his competition including Venusaur and Blastoise so people who join pokemon only sees Charizard so they like it more.

TPC just doesn't want any other starter to be more popular than Charizard, Which is why every OVA they make like Origins, Megas special, and Twilight Wings are centered around Charizard only.

first 3 gyms are a cakewalk, by the time you ever have to face a psychic, poison, flying, or fire trainer you should be more than well equipped with all the options the game throws at you.
