Lillie's family drama is a side plot for the evil villain stuff. The core narrative is always about taking the trials, climbing the mountain, and bonding with the people of Alola.
Hau, the Trial captains, becoming the first champion. That's your story. Lillie gets a large focus but the focus is always on her bond with the player and how it betters her. Playing as her wouldn't have worked, she's a side character developing because you the player make her feel strong. The only thing SM did was finally make characters that were actual characters. The trial captains, kahunas, the two evil teams, both rivals, and Lillie are all memorable characters with lives outside of their jobs, families, personalities, goals, and relationships with one another. The only real problem is that Alola is too small to carry all of this plot so it's cramped and you can't go ten seconds without a cutscene.
It doesn't deserve to be mentioned alongside SwSh where the story feels like after thought.
