Are Diamond and Pearl worth playing or should I just buy Platinum to get the better experience? Like is it leagues ahead or just some added content? The distortion world seems really cool but I don't want to get it just for that.

Base DP are almost as slow as SWSH and SM in terms of overall movement and transitions. Platinum did a lot of work in speeding things up and making the aesthetic of the region more palatable.
Aside from that it's just a lot more side content in Platinum that's worthwhile to get lost in. You could make the argument DP have a better "mid" storyline because the game lets you do Maylene or Crash's gyms interchangeably, but that's really the only thing DP has over Platinum at all.

DP's regional dex is tiny, dex distribution is awful, the games are painfully slow, and the pacing from the 2nd to 3rd gym is completely awful because you skip through Hearthome since Fantina's the 5th gym leader and not the 3rd. Platinum speeds up the game a bit, adds more mons, and has the Battle Frontier in the post game. No reason to get DP over Platinum unless you really wanna use Murkrow/Misdreavus/Stunky/Glameow since Platinum cuts them from the wild for whatever reeason

Platinum is better than DP in pretty much everyway. The only areas it's worse in is
