never said they weren't one note characters. that applies to every character in the ashnime, except may and dawn
serena had her diet contests and clemont had a kino gym battle and was somewhat useful during the final season, bonnie was basically the main girl the last season

It was hype back in the day but I entirely doubt it holds up to repeated viewings just because you know what's actually followed up on and what's entirely ignored. Once the hype wore off, it's just Diet Shonen for what can be shown in a kodomo anime.

eh
great animations and ash showing a bit of growth, but other than that
shonen cliches, the constant filler cancer that plagues the ashnime, ash not being the same as gen 1-4 ash who had a connected growth going on which was abruptly stopped in gen 5, and the fact that after getting the advantage in the final round he lost to some self insert with a mega charizard
it was ok to follow for the animated battles and to see if he would actually win the league, but other than that let's face it, it wasn't that good

He never even really assumed the role of leader of the group. As many thought he would do.

In fact there were only a few episodes focused on that and in a one sided way, he never even showed anything in return. And there was only something real happening in the last episode at the last moment.

Apart from excellent animation and artstyle, XY was nothing but a waste of potential.
