I think what bothers me about this thing the most is there is no evidence of poison in shellder, I don't even think it can learn a poison move outside shitty toxic. They could have at least made a galarian shellder to explain this but I suppose that would require actually caring about pokemon.

Why would it be a different species? The implication is that Slowpoke and Shellder become symbiotically linked thanks to Slowpoke being psychic, and when the Shelderr migrates to Slowpoke's head the acupressure from the bite invigorates Slowbro's psychic power.
Being bitten anywhere at all should trigger the initial evolution.

I understand that, but that's precisely what makes Slowking look like an afterthought.
With Slowbro they managed to come up with a more distinct concept, they had the freedom for it, but with Slowking they didn't have room for anything as distinct as Galarian Slowbro. They just did it for the sake of completion.
It feels like when they began working on Galarian Slowking, they didn't think "hey, what if we did this or that with Slowking?", they thought "shit, we did Slowbro, guess we've got to do Slowking now. Any ideas?"
