Can someone tell me how conquest actually was? I remember reviewers at the time said it was fucking braindead, and professional reviewers aren't known for their skill or diligence.

It's a shame none of them will ever get a chance to be fleshed out. Conquest's 6v6 strategy battles especially I thought has so much potential if it were overhauled to make Pokemon unique and better balanced. But now we'll never see it again

GBA and DS Mystery Dungeon actually filters kids.
It has very complex mechanics, perhaps the most complex of any Pokemon sub-series, and very harsh punishments for failure.
I doubt some 10 year old zoomer could beat Explorers

It was fine, the concept is shallow and the execution is poor, balance is non existent with some mons being too strong (anything with a move like fury swipes or fire spin) while some are worthless (anything with 2 mov, namely rhyperior, being the worst fully evolved and worse than a lot of first stages), items are insanely unbalanced with the guardian charm allowing for early game sweeps snowballing into being overleveled, I had fun but it was objectively shit with far too many broken mons

Explorers is the opposite of pokemon to me. Pokemon is a game with excellent core mechanics, but with not enough effort put in to take advantage of said mechanics.
Explorers delivers in almost every side aspect and does the best it can given its limitations but I'm really just not a fan of the core mechanics.
