>>46235283i think you went overboard with the detailing & shading, especially on #2. at first glance i could barely tell where the eye and face was because of the dithering and shading obscuring it.
take
>>46233399 as an example. on every one of their sprites it’s really easy to notice their faces. the eyes have minimal shading, and when there is shading there is enough contrast for their eyes to pop and the face to still be instantly recognizable. this is pretty vital for a character design to be able to read. it could probably be partially improved by getting rid of the light pink shading in the sclera.
i wouldn’t know the pink stuff was fur if i hadn’t read your description. i really don’t think it needs all of that extra red shading on that area, it just makes it look muddled and ambiguous. oftentimes less is more when it comes to pixel work.
& are those supposed to be tusks coming out of the pink fur? one is basically tangent to the eyeball which is a big art no-no, it adds to the confusing-ness of the design. in addition one of the tusks looks weirdly smaller than the other. if this was intentional then i’d recommend you exaggerate it by making the other tusk bigger to make it look intentionally done instead of it looking like a symmetry mistake.
i like the rat gengar a lot, i think you did well with the form and level of detail. you are definitely very skilled. the only problem i have with it is that i’m not sure what that scaly ribbed white-tipped penis looking thing coming out of the forehead is, lol
