one of these is made in photoshop using the Gen 2 artystyle, the other is made with all the limitations of a gameboy's processor. G/S were also on a bit of a time crunch and were thought to be the last games of the series. While they definitely could make the map look a bit nicer, it will never ever look like the image on the left

There is a difference between static fanart and fitting it into a GBC rom is the same different between impossible and possible.

Surely, Dragon Quest titles, Oracle of Seasons/Time and few others had a better graphical artstyle on GBC, but making a comparison a fanart better than any GBC game plus being impossible to set it on GBC (non-logical tileset mapping = many different tiles that result in a larger filesize than even GBA, each tile and sprite individually can only have up to 4 colors aside of plain white and pitch black) is basically spouting about developers not surpassing hardware limits as if it that was possible to begin with.

zoomers don't know that the game was a GB game, not a GBC game. It had to run on the OG because the Color was still not anywhere near as big in the market yet.

Because GameFreak are hacks.
Gen I was a pure clusterfuck of design failure that blew up out of nowhere, and GameFreak hasn't really given two shits about quality game content since. They let Iwata completely QC gen 2 for them and then casually rebuilt the entire data structure of the games for Gen 3 while telling the audience to get fucked.
GameFreak have never cared about delivering an optimal, high-quality software launch because they don't need to.

pokemon has much more under the hood and space on cartridges is much more limited so there's not as much detail to be spent on the individual stuff, other rpgs have far fewer enemies/creatures, moves and other things which gives them a little more freedom.
Sure, pokemon could probably have looked a little better but teams were fairly small and the focus just probably wasnt on the overworld.

RSE was fine for its time dude, kinda. It had bad graphics but a huge map for a GBA game. And as a game itself, it is good, because it has got good pacing and a great map who interconnectes frawlessly. It's not the best GBA game, but at least is genuinely a nice game.
SWSH got nothing of RSE's strengths.

Bro NES games were using diagonal movement as early as EarthBound Beginnings. SNES had it in Zelda. We could have had it as early as gen 1 if Gamefreak weren't hacks.

back then Game Freak really was a small company and their games were made by a few people with limited resources. At least the first two Gens are excusable, starting with the third they should have had the abilities to make them look better but somehow they didn't.
One thing is that creating over 368 different entities each with different angles is something that shouldn't be overlooked. I don't know any other game with so many unique characters.

I don't even think the GBC could handle that many colours at once. There's also way too much detail there. The best looking GBC games don't look anywhere near that good. I'm a zoomer who has actually played Gameboy Color games.
