Hoenn is the best out of the linear regions because everything is interconnected and you always have a new area to explore when you're forced to backtrack. Plus it has the wildest aesthetic perfect for the Pokémon setting.
Kanto and Johto are unique for being the least linear regions and having the most original feel and atmosphere as things weren't very established yet and the world still had traces of our real world in it
Sinnoh is like Hoenn but done worse, less interesting route design and region aesthetic, Mt. Coronet is based however
Unova is where the downhill of regions started, every region started becoming a theme park of realistic attractions and Mario levels: water level, lava level, desert level, etc. Progressively felt less like a cohesive country with an established ecosystem and more like just ticking boxes. Also where the backtracking ended completely and the regions became 100% linear. Only reason why Unova isn't rock bottom is because Kalos and Galar are just that dogshit. Alola gets points for the comfy atmosphere and exotic aesthetic so it's above Unova, though Unova at least has far more exploration than any of the 3D regions.
