This is all a part of the same point which is ignoring that Gen 2 at the time was conceived as an addendum to Gen 1, not as a replacement or replica like Gen 3 onwards. As such, Gen 2 is supposed to complement Kanto, its history and lore, and its regional dex. You're supposed to use Kanto Pokémon throughout the game and Gen 2 Pokémon were canonically being discovered as you adventured, so they were supposed to be hard to find to make it that much more gratifying when you came across a new Pokémon.

It's a Gameboy color game and it's still the only game in the series with two regions barring its own remake which fixed the half-assed problem anyway.

More like it means that if you ever want to add a Pokemon to your party after a certain point (which you will probably want to since so many good mons are only available very late in the game) it'll take an annoyingly long time to grind them up. A game with actual good difficulty wouldn't need to take out the option to grind alltogether to forcefully keep you underleveled.

Again, giving more importance to Team Rocket would have diminished the player's agency in Gen 1 and discredit your previous playthrough and the final boss of the game you are now playing.

But all this does is discredit your own playthrough in GS, even more so if you didn't play RBY. You basically did nothing, all you achieved was defeat some who admin; you didn't even deal a crippling blow to team Rocket, there's nothing really preventing them from coming back since Giovanni's whereabouts are still unknown. There would be nothing ludonarratively wrong with Giovanni coming back as the final boss only to beat him for good, your gen 1 character would have still put team Rocket into disarray and turned them from a well established mafia to fleeting remnants. I'd even say that it would make beating a Team Rocket in full strenght in gen 1 seem all the more like an achievement if they're so well established they're able to somewhat make a comeback later on.

And how am I not doing that? The next gen didn't have nearly as many problems, and GF should have already learned from the first games. What cultural or historical context prevented GF from making gyms tougher, letting you actually play with the fun new mons during your normal playthrough and not having the level scaling suck ass? Yes, GSC wanted to build on gen 1. Doesn't mean that this magically makes all these little problems not relevant, and it's not even necessarily a good thing either.

It really doesn't. It enhances it. You're constantly chasing a specter throughout the whole of Johto and Kanto. You keep hearing about what happened 3 years ago, about that brilliant kid who disbanded Team Rocket, you go to the old Kanto landsites and nothing is the same because of the influence he had, you're in the game discovering new Pokémon because all of the previous ones had already been discovered by him, you can't catch any of the Kanto legendaries because they had already been caught by him, and then finally once you have explored both regions and climbed the peak of the world's most dangerous mountain, who is there? The person you've been hearing about or whose effects you've experienced throughout the whole game.

It's pretty good, albeit simple, storytelling. You don't need everything spelled out for you and you don't need to be railroaded into a linear path to have a good story to tell. HGSS loses some of the thematic underpinnings of GSC because it was made in a different era but if you play the originals, all of this is there.

I guess we're gonna have to disagree on gyms. I already said I think the gyms are challenging enough because of the level curve in the game. As for the Pokémon I already said it enhances the experience because the Pokémon were canonically being discovered by the player midgame. They were supposed to be hard to find because most were brand new undiscovered Pokémon, so you, as the player, felt more gratification when finding a new one. You're looking at these games with the Gen 3+ perspective where every region has tried to be its own standalone thing but that's why I keep saying you need to analyze the games from the era's perspective.

The level scaling issue isn't about the enemies being too high, because level hardly means anything after badge boosts and stat exp. The problem is the entire middle third of the game is designed to be played in any order so everything is at the same level so you just breeze through it.
