Why cant I leave the designated path? Everything feels like a hallway surrounded with cardboard cutouts. It plays like a gameboy remake.

Literally 2 routes later you're dropped into a big open area without a set path. This is no different from Route 1 in other games.

Every time I think about the game SWSH could have been I lose it.
They should have been the resolution to the Kalos arc we all needed. It could have at least been a return to form or EVEN just an extension of the gameplay that LGPE had.
No, they had to make it Alola 2.0.

It actually isn't. It's built on the Sun and Moon engine. LGPE uses a different engine, which is why it looks so much better and has better features.

Yeah it pissed me off to after I looked at that map. They clearly wanted to make a vast Wild Area covering the whole region, and separate them into 4 sections. You can still see some of the scrapped remains in the final map. A whole Wild Area from Potswick to Magnolia's house, the Western Beach, the river delta to the east of Motostoke, a lake and waterfall behind Hammerlocke, etc.

Early Pokemon was always an adventure RPG, being based on the likes of Dragon Quest.
Saying anything otherwise is peak revisionist history. Red and Green got popular in the first place because kids would spread schoolyard rumors about things in the game because two different player's experiences could be completely different with how open it was.

A roadblock is different from a path. You travek from the station to Motostoke, but there is no single correct way to do it. Older games also had routes with multiple entrances and one or more closed until you return.

Because it was rushed. It's pretty obvious with how unpolished the final product is that SWSH needed more development time but they said fuck it and cut a ton of corners to make ends meet. The sad part is they were rewarded for this with good sales.

It literally is. The engine that SWSH and LGPE use are one and the same. They just opted for the traditional style for LGPE and the new (Gen 7) style for SWSH.

Yeah. Same engine just scaled up to accommodate 720p.
Biggest giveaway are that the overworld is based on the same fundamentals, recycled trainer animations and the walking animations for all Pokémon that were never used until SwSh.

You're referring to the assets and thinking that has any bearing on the engine. It doesn't.
LGPE and SWSH are derived from the same engine, just applying different gameplay styles. LGPE is traditional, SWSH is the new one from SM on.

I mean, I probably would have hated it if it were just a shitty Breath of the Wild, because the entire time I was playing Breath of the Wild I was like "man this is better than the recent Zelda games, but I wish it was more like the original". BotW can fix that problem with a sequel, or a remake of the first game in that fancy new engine. Pokemon can't go back to when it had good map design, because it only happened like twice (RS and BW, although we can argue on the latter if you want).

Because it’s not meant for you to leave the path. There’s not even a reason to leave the path you used as an example because there’s nothing in the surrounding areas that is of interests, just trees and shrubs. The fact that you complain about this even though just 15 minutes later ingame you are given the freedom to completely explore a wide open area, with the only limiting ability being catching high level Pokémon, is baffling to say the least. It’s literally complaining for the sake of complaining.

It isnt. Its the main reason they use same basic lighting effects for mons/gigantamax as they used for Z move aura in S/M Its also the reason why Pokemon are not scaled propperly.
