The problem with XY is that it has you explore Mega Evolution firsthand, rather than having it be understood already.
Diantha wonders if Kalos's legendary Pokemon could explain mega evolution being seen in Kalos, but Sycamore corroborates this later in the game with his own theory.
Xerneas/Yveltal use the life energy of Pokemon, and ORAS explains that since Pokemon bioenergy is Infinity Energy, that's why the Ultimate Weapon is what led to the discovery of Mega Evolutions.
It's correlation, not causation.

I think a NPC in X/Y actually stated that mega evolution was a recent discovery, so it technically takes place in the original timeline.

That’s the statement, that’s what tells us that Mega Evolution isn’t exclusive to just Kalos. It doesn’t confirm anything or talk about how the energy is exclusive to Kalos, it questions whether Mega Evolution can be achieved by other mons in other regions. Nothing special confirming that Mega Evos are completely gone, everyone. Nothing that special to cry about here.

No, he’s questioning the origins of megas and why they’re only in Kalos. He addresses this later in the game when he explains they only occur in Kalos because he learned about AZ’s weapon creating them.

Hoenn probably takes place in Kalos and might be part of Kalos (like French Guiana is to France in the real world). ORAS is pretty much the "pseudo-sequel" of XY more than a remake. In that case, I don't think Sycamore would have been wrong

you have to understand, the adults who still play these games have to use several layers of headcanon to actually enjoy them. And when canon interferes with headcanon, people get pissed.

People care because Gamefreak retcons at will and it fucks with something they care more about than the creators. I don't really get why "ORAS retconned Megas" is such a hard thing for some people to understand when this franchise is purely built on retroactive continuity with some of the worst lore and world building known to Video Games.

Norman’s family is from Johto and he regularly commuted from Johto to Hoenn prior to their move in to Littleroot.

There’s no way a single professor or authority would have somehow missed the registered gym leader moving across country with his two Slaking that aren’t even a known species.
