A lot of early pokemon mechanics were designed around this mentality, trade evolutions, 1% encounter events, shinies, that's what made the early games so soulful, the mistery surrounding it, it really felt like the world you were in was alive and filled with secrets, you weren't supposed to mass breed shinies with perfect IVs, you were just a clueless explorer, I think what really took the soul out of the new games is how they just stopped trying to create these in game moments since you can now just google them, try playing a game like this, no bulbapedia, no planned strategy, just explore it as you go.
