Because they came first back in 1996, because boomers only have room in their tiny little brains to remember the first 151 mons only, and because GF endlessly and relentlesly keeps shilling and referring back to gen 1 every subsequent gen. These are the worse starters Lame Freak has ever shat out. They just ripped off Donkey-Kong, Jak, and Gex . The only reason anyone cares about them is because 2/3 of them are broken as fuck.

Rillabloom is the only memorable one. Intelli-whatever and cinderace are extremely small and forgettable. The only attachment people have to Ace is due to its prevalence competitively and its forced appearance in the anime

Neither was true for gen 1 and 2 as far as forcing starters competitively or in the anime. But yes, starting with Blaziken and Mudkip GF did realize the formula.
