Electrivire has too many problems holding it back to ever really pull it's weight. It's not an unusable Pokemon, but it's certainly not a good one.

Come back when you've learned how to play a real format like VGC. Singles is primarily a teaching tool used to teach literal children how type advantages work. It is not meant to be the end goal or product, hence why VGC is the only real official format. You're supposed to take off the training wheels. If you can't even do that and cling to them because you cannot fathom life without them, you are truly never going to make it.

The format is doubles ENTIRELY because of Wobbuffet in gen 3, which could force matches to quite literally never end:

Wobbuffet on Wobbuffet in Gen 3 made Funbro look like a little bitch.
This is literally the reason why Struggle was changed, Shadow Tag was altered to give immunity to itself, and singles matches were changed to double battles.

Guy you were replying to here, while you are right 123 attack is quite a bit better than 'decent' when that's really your only good stat and with nothing else going for you it's significance diminishes considerably.
For instance take Alola Raichu, one of PU's better electric types, and it only has 95 special attack, but it also has significantly better coverage than Electivire, dual STABs, Nasty Plot, high speed relative to the tier, etc.

Because this is Game Freak we're talking about not Smogon. Smogon DID ban Wobbuffet if I remember correctly, but GF doesn't do that kind of shit. Mark my words, they will never ban a non-legendary Pokemon from official competitions: they'll just nerf them into the ground to discourage their usage instead. So instead they changed it to doubles, where Wobbuffet is effectively completely useless and more often than not a dead weight. Doubles would also be less likely to have a deadlock like that happen to it again as well.

Whether Doubles is better than Singles or not is irrelevant to why VGC is the former over the latter. The fact is, VGC was changed to Doubles in Gen 4 because Game Freak fucked up as they usually do.

Crawdaunt can get away with only 120 Attack because it has Adaptability, Swords Dance, and Crabhammer.
Tornadus-T can get away with only 110 Sp Attack because it has Nasty Plot and Hurricane.
Nidoking can get away with only 95 Sp Attack because it has Sheer Force.
Hawlucha can get away with only 92 Attack because it has Swords Dance, Close Combat, and boosted Acrobatics.

Motor Drive is really cool, but theres just no way to work the niche. Plus even so his main STAB is a recoil move, to fuck over his survivability almost as badly as his shite bulk. Plus stacking electrics in a double battle to proct it is a bad idea when EQ and High Horsepower are so prevalent in any format.

The best move is Wild Charge, and that's only 90 BP and has recoil, everything else is weak elemental stuff like Ice Punch. They really should've left it with 110 base Speed and just put 10 points less into attack and 5 less into Sp. Def and give that fucker Iron Fist or Sheer Force as an Ability. And make a 120BP physical Electric move for all Pokémon with 33% recoil and have Volt Tackle drop to 25% recoil since only the Pikachu line gets it and they're super weak, or make Volt Tackle 130BP or something. Most of these examples either fill Electivire’s only viable jobs better, are more flexible than it, or both.
Even though it has base 123 attack, it still struggles to break walls because its movepool is terrible, and its best electric STAB is Thunderbolt. All it has ever done is roll with elemental puncues+EQ, or you invest in special attack and use flamethrower/focus blast, and regardless of what set you use, it hits like a wet noodle. It was shit from the start.

It's that GF refuses to make good moves for certain types in certain categories.
See the lack of decent physical ghost moves before Poltergeist as an example. Electric is in that same boat.

Team preview. The entire point of the Pokemon is to switch into electric attacks and motor drive up. Letting your opponent know that is going to happen for free from the very beginning of the game completely nullifies it's role. Doesn't Smogon still make new bans for old gens? I feel like old meta tiers should be allowed to update. Not as often as current gen tiers, but at least occasionally so that mons like Electivire and Ninjask don't get screwed.

Example: in VGC 2019 is Pidgeot a shitmon? Yes, since he doesn't provide either a decent offensive presence for its typings (Staraptor, Dodrio would of it better) neither a good support role(Tailwind available to whimsicott, staraptor) and hasn't got a unique role by it's peculiar set of stats+ability+movepool

Just because something is unviable in the current meta doesn't mean it's a shitmon, just look at tangrowth in gen7 that went from NU to OU or Mawile Mega in VGC 2016 that rose to top usage after being ignored for the first half of the meta
