It squandered all of that. Even Alolan forms ended up being a shitty gimmick to prepare for LGPE only having muh 151.
Most of the hype for SM died off by the time the demo was datamined, except people were in disbelief when it turned out Gen 7 would be the first to remove the National Dex and pave the way towards where we're at now.
