Te fact they always make a new engine for each Gen is another factor - the first year of pre-production is building the engine and getting the story/region/characters/pokémon fleshed out. Afte rthat year, it's on to building the game. They start pre-production just before launching the newest Gen (so they started IX around about the time of E3), then there was the whole issue of covid and Gamee Freak themselves saying it would likely impact future projects and the likelihood of Gen IX this year decreases dramatically. I wouldn't be surprised of they too a further year for this Gen. launched Let's Go 2 Johto in '22 to give Gen IX breathing room to be done.
'Curse, I fully believe they'll want to release Gen X in 2026 and a year extra for this Gen or next makes Gen X's release line up with that year.
