They really fucked up, if the gym leader dynamaxed randomly it would've been better, knowing that the enemy will always dynamax their last mon is so fucking predictable yoy can boost against the ads and steamroll their team, sub spam to stall their dynamax, etc.

And no, adding the word "regional" in front of gimmicks doesn't exclude megas. They were still originally from and exclusive to a specific region

Where do ORAS and SM's stones even come from? I think an NPC says Alola's stones at least come from Kalos.

How exactly did Ash get turned to stone and then un-turned to stone in the first movie? Movie magic. This is irrelevant anyway.

Play the games. ORAS's stones come from the power of Hoenn's legendaries (Fug has mega power, Kyogre/Groudon going primal makes more Mega Stones appear in Hoenn) and meteorites. SM's stones are relegated to battle facilities so it doesn't really matter anyway.

The other anons said megas aren't a regional gimmick because they are usable outside of Kalos. If Z-moves are usable outside of Alola, wouldn't that mean they are also not a regional gimmick? Either both are or neither is.

This. They're in Kalos, Hoenn, Alola and Kanto games. Started as a regional gimmick, but obviously they aren´t anymore.

it isn't non-regional because it's *usable* outside of Kalos, it's non-regional because it naturally occurs outside of Kalos. Z-crystals and Z-rings still work outside of Alola, but any way you slice it, you can only get Z-crystals and Z-rings in Alola. Meanwhile Mega stones appear in Kalos, Hoenn, Kanto, and even the PMD universe.

As far as I know we don't ever see where mega stones come from in other regions though. The only place they are naturally found in in Kalos. And besides, that's not what they were saying, they were saying "regional gimmicks" can only be used in the region they originate it.

Bitch did you forget you find mega stones scattered all around hoenn, just like in kalos? Plus, no matter how you put it you are able to use megas in 4 (5 if you count sm and usum a two) main series games, all in different regions. For z-moves and dynamax (at least for now) you can only them in a single region. If in the future they appear outside alola and galar then they won't be regional gimmicks anymore, but for now they are.

"Regional gimmicks" is a pointless category because there is no functional difference between Z-moves, megas, and Dynamax. The idea of regional gimmicks was just one of many copes made by people desperate for megas to return.

Whether it's a pointless category or not is irrelevant for the discussion at hand. The discussion was about whether megas are regional or not and the answer is no. Also, i don't know why OP decided to go with regional for the poll, but i doubt that it's because of what you say considering megas are by far the most popular of those 3.
