I’ve been watching Yu Yu Hakusho lately and I was on the dark tournament arc which gave me an idea. How would you design a tournament arc like it? Would it be pokemon/trainer or would it be like mystery dungeon where the Pokémon talk?

A tournament arc needs filler characters that only appear for their fight and maybe make a cameo later, but are actually "real" designs and have their match be memorable.

Simple.

Have a Double Battle tournament unrelated to the world championships. Pair up random trainers along with some surprise guests and maybe 1 or 2 ringers exclusive to the arc to work together. Either Ash and Go work together or separately but throw in some interesting fanservicey matchups. Teams like Brawly and Marlon or Maylene and Whitney are present, showing their own coordination.
