Why is the fanbase like this? SWSH is even more guilty of linearity than Alola yet people praise the Wild Area as some sort of masterpiece.

There are differences, they're just not as big of a deal as peopme make them out to be. Pokemon always changes between generations. I'm sure you can find peopke on this very board who are completely convinced any generation from 2-8 killed the series. It doesn't mean any of them are right.

I will never deny XY was the start of Pokemon's huge decline but god damn it was LEAGUES better than SM and SwSh, the online, the region, the designs, the customization, the berries, the regional dex... pretty much everything was superior than SwSh and while it was a downgrade from B2W2 it still had a lot of good points.
SM is barely worth to mention and USUM improves some points and completely ruins others, while SwSh is even more soulless than Alola (and I still don't know how they did it, Alola is literally vacation Kanto, how did they got a worse region? Truly amazing)

Bait or not, maps that are just straight lines and a tiny handful of forks that only detour you for 5 seconds is the cornerstone of a shitty linear game.
Guess which "small indie company" made a game like this, despite having enough money at their disposal to literally buy an actual IRL country or two?

linearity is death to adventure games. the more of a hallway the game is the more GAMEY it feels. pokemon lives and dies on the idea that you are making a unique adventure through the world, that you have so many options and are taking a different path every time. its why the game was so social, theres so much to talk about with your friends because your journeys will never be the same. obviously the game needs direction but giving a feeling of uniqueness and choice in games is as simple as having a wider route with more paths even if they all lead to the same place or optional areas that you can revisit once you gain tms to reward players for being attentive. thats all it takes to reinstill a sense of choice in the players that modern games really are lacking compared to the older pokemon games. think of what you do after rock tunnel for example, theres a lot of things you can do but only one thing you have to do which is get the silph scope. if it were a modern game the first thing they would do is have an NPC tell you that you should go to the game corner and block off the gym entrances. the gate guy who wants water would be unable to be completed until after you finish lavender town. thats the difference between the linear game design of the past games and the linear game design of the modern games.
