I'm not saying Venusaur isn't a solid pokemon in gen 1- but for actually playing through the game there's no reason to use the starter. It'd be like using a legendary pokemon to beat the elite 4. Like, you can, nothing's stopping you, but it's a bit of a hollow victory.

Venusaur was the best starter
>vileplume and victreebel kinda sucked in comparison with the same typing
Exeggutor was the only superior grass type
>vaporeon/starmie/slowbro/lapras/gyrados were all better than blastoise

Charmander: Normie pick, the most boring person ever. Still the best pick because it's better than Ninetales, Arcanine, Magmar, Flareon and Rapidash
Squirtle: Decent, but foregoing the superior Gyarados to pik Squirtle is a dumbdumb move
Venusaur: Tied with Exeggutor for best grass type in the game. Overall the best pick for the early game. By the time it is less useful against gyms other mons are available to cover its weaknesses.

Overall Bulbasaur is the best pick, both in RB and in FRLG
