How does anyone manage to make a full team in a mainline pokemon game? My starter plus 1 other good mon just shitstomp the entire game. I never have a reason to use more than that. That and 1-2 slots are always reserved for HM slaves.

The intention is to make the games slightly more difficult.
More Pokémon == More EXP distribution == Less OP Pokémon
The last time I played like that was when I played Emerald at like 10. Of course my starter was sweeping effortlessly if it was absorbing EXP like a sponge.
What's the point of playing a monster-catching game if you are only choosing one upon hundreds?

In Crystal, you can get Larvitar the moment you arrive in Kanto.
In the meanwhile, try an Espeon (look for te XSpeed glitch to get happiness easier) or Granbull, it's easy to get in Crystal.

Just play the slots. Using the ones that have better win chance (Usually occupied by an NPC) there's no real risk of losing. It's what I did to get early Thunder/Blizzard/Fire Blast.

Jumpluff. Hes a beast in gen. Fast sleep powder puts niggas to sleep. Then you hit em with that leech seed protect stall and mix in a giggity drain every now and again to spice things up. Resists water to boot. Youll be pleasently surpised how decent jumpluff is for a gen 2 run
