The dislike of Sugimori cards isn't because people think Sugimori art is bad, it's because most of his art is the Pokemon equivalent of a stock photo. It was used in basically everything to advertise Pokemon, so when you're collecting cards what would excite you more, brand new art you've never seen before, or the stock art you've likely already seen over and over from other Pokemon media?
It certainly didn't help that the majority of his cards where just his stock art slapped onto a stock background, which makes the entire card feel cheap and lazy (because they are). Sugi's best card art is when he actually drew NEW art for the card, because shockingly, people want to see new art and not just the same art they've seen a billion times everywhere else.
