Aura is pretty much the special attacking side of Fighting. Its connection to aura is what explains the Fighting type, so try again.

I mean, I guess... They probably realized they needed special Fighting type moves when they did the split in Gen 4 and so they came up with the aura idea.
It's along the same lines as sound being the special attacking side of Normal.

The two things most closely associated with aura as it pertains to the series: Aura Sphere, a special Fighting move, and Lucario, a Fighting type.
There are similarities to Psychic, sure, but it's similar to qi, more of a life force/spiritual energy than anything.

I mean, there's some muddy areas in Pokémon. Sand is usually Ground type (see: Hippodown, Flygon, Sandygast) but Sandstorm is Rock.
Gamefreak decided aura is Fighting type.

The Steel comes from Lucario's spikes and those bands on his shoulders. Pokken and SSB for instance model them with a more metallic quality which could imply weighted gear.
