>>46337987I'm not claiming a pokemon region or mon based on Mesoamerican culture should be 100% accurate to it, of course it shouldn't
But I do think that if you're going to use and adapt a given culture or concept you should understand it first, and that's sadly not something that happens with 99.9999% of Mesoamerican influenced stuff. Like, half the shit you see in video games, movies, and caretoons when you see "Aztec" stuff is about as accurate as if you had a Japanese character with a korean name with a chinese design (with a literal slant eye buck tooth caricature face), that used a egyptian fighting style. And yes, the fact I used 3 asian and 1 middle eastern example is intentional/part of the analogy.
If you want an example of somebody doing their own spin on Mesoamerican culture/mythology but having doine the actual research on it, look up Onyx Equinox, or Mefomefo's art of Aztec gods like pic related (pic being their version of Huitzlopotchli, which doesn't actually resmble how the god is depicted in Aztec art but understands actual aztec art motifs and iconography to make something that still feels like it COULD be)
Hell, my standards aren't even that high, i'd say Road to El Dorado as
>>46337940 qualigfies as well, even if it's a mix of a lot of stuff and common misconceptions too and is nowhere near as well researced as Onyx or Mefo's art.
