Gen II: Great In-Game and respectable in competitive. Get's memed on because its stats are exactly the same as Charizard's but at least it has unique Electric Coverage via ThunderPunch.
Gen IV: Loses ThunderPunch in the Phys/Spec split. It gets Eruption which would have made it a god in any other previous Gen but this gen introduced Stealth Rocks. Also, it's the only Johto Starter not to get Ancient Power which would've given it Rock coverage. It's also the only Johto Starter not to get Swords Dance so it can't even attempt to use physical movepool.
Gen VI: Its flames now only show up during attacks instead of being out during the entire battle causing everyone to call it an "éclair". What's stupid about this is that Pokemon Amie is now a thing, so there's no reason it can't have its flames out in battle and have them off during Amie. Meanwhile, Charizard gets 2 Mega, one of which lets it use physical sets, which Typhlosion still can't do.
Gen VII: Its Island Scan move is Double Kick an embarrassingly weak move, even more so because Typhlosion is a SPECIAL attacker. It also gets Stomping Tantrum (an average physical move), but not Earth Power (a special ground move that MAKES THE GROUND ERUPT WITH POWER). It's so bad that it's the only Pokemon in Smogon that specially says "Do not ever use this Pokemon with the intent of winning games"
Gen VIII: The Johto Starters are unceremoniously culled for "Balance". Meanwhile, Charizard gets to be the Champion's Ace with another new form. It also get special Ground Coverage via Scorching Sands that Typhlosion's been begging for. Even worse, Shillderace comes in and steals Typhlosion's role as the only Pure Fire type Starter.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus: 2 decades of being "wUrsT FiRe StArTer" Cyndaquil gets the coveted role as the Fire type starter.
