I'm a boomer and I'm picking Rowlet rather than a Charizard clone that made me pick Meganium all the time. As for Oshawott, Unova starters were the worst starters in the franchise at the point of picking Lillipup instead.

He did in gold. In gold he could learn thunder punch, dig, and earthquake via TM. Thunder punch was still special only so in gen 2 and in gen 2 he was tied for the 19th best special attacker in the 251 pokedex with Charizard with most of the other members of the top 20 being legendary or an eeveelution.
