Gyarados, koffing, meowth, elekid, wobbuffet, nosepass, chingling, darumaka, drifloon, vanillite, pumpkaboo, and swirlix are animals in-lore. It's not like birds didn't exist in the middle ages because modern planes were based on them. Unown, sigilyph, yamask, bronzor, golett, litwick, and honedge are manmade but based on things that existed before the middle ages. Banette's spirit could possess another doll, humans played with toys since the stone age.

but the mons like claydol and golurk were founded by ancient human civilizations so why wouldn't it be in a game that takes place in the past? If anything there could be origin stories for these mons.

And Unown are related to Arceus and WEREN’T in Sword and Shield so they should be in these games. I’m assuming the Pokémon that weren’t in Sword and Shield will be in Legends.

Ultra wormholes could theoretically still be a thing, they exist without direct influence by the Aether Foundation, and obviously if a character from classic Hoenn can fall into one, it stands to reason that they could open in more places than just Alola
The Type Null line was created during Gladion's childhood, though, so it wouldn't exist, but Ultra Beasts could technically show up anywhere, any time, for no real reason.

Claydol line is based on clay idols from the fucking japanese stone age. The beckoning cat, weather paper doll things and the daruma dolls are all from the edo period. The chingling and bronzor lines are based on stuff found on shinto and buddhist temples.

And why is gyarados even there? Those fish kite/flag things? They are probably old as shit too.
