I haven’t read the manga but I assumed this was a thing just because they didn’t know which one was actually real (time or space) so the statue melded then together, it’s like that in the remake too

These are 1:1 remakes, there's nothing new in these games, otherwise they would've shown them.

The whole point of the statue is that it's supposed to resemble both Dialga and Palkia depending on how you interpret it.
This doesn't translate very well into anything other than top-down sprites so any attempts to recreate it have looked awkward.
In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the statue was designed first, and whoever designed Dialga and Palkia was just told to make 2 completely different designs based on it.
