They've probably been working on this since SwSh finished. One group did DLC, the new company did BDSP, and Gamefreak's main team worked in LA. We're looking at around 3 years of dev time (summer 2019 - Spring 2022)

They usually start on the next set of games after the first set are finished. SwSh finished in 2019, meaning this game will have been developed for 3 years.

I agree. That timeframe they announced, esp considering COVID lockdowns in Japan + Olympics is insane

2022 is way too early for a game that *could* potentially shift the focus of the franchise

No, LA has been in development for at least three years or more
GF has two main teams dedicated to developing Pokémon games
While the former is working on the new generation, the latter develops remakes or enhanced versions, and vice versa
The development schedules of the two teams are staggered so that they can release games almost every year according to TPC's requirements
Because they outsourced the remake to ILCA this time, both GF teams can develop LA together at the same time

*The content of the DLC should have been largely completed by the time Sword & Shield was released, so last year was strictly a rest year.

You fuckers have to remember that covid stamps productivity into the ground, they lost probably half a year worth of dev time and their current productivity is probably far under normal levels

But even with covid's influence, GF's current dev productivity will be highest ever
That's because all the mainline games of the past decade have been developed by "less than half of GF"
And for the past two years they have been recruiting experienced developers for the new game (now we know it's LA)

Of course even if they put more dev productivity into this game, it still won't look good enough
But it definitely won't be worse than swsh
